An exploration of materials.
I'm Louise, founder of Studio Loum and a bespoke upholsterer based in Bristol.
My background in the History of Art and graphic design gave me an early appreciation for craftsmanship — the importance of understanding why something was made, how it was made, and what it deserves to become. That appreciation is at the heart of everything I do at Studio Loum.
I use traditional and modern upholstery methods and strive to use natural materials. I believe that a well-made piece of furniture deserves a long life, and that the right fabric — chosen carefully, with an understanding of colour, texture and context — can give it exactly that.
I hold a Level 2 qualification from the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers and am currently studying for my Level 3. I feel strongly about working with natural, traceable materials and am developing relationships to bring locally sourced wool into my work — reducing reliance on synthetic fillings and fibres.
I offer a full consultation service, helping clients choose fabrics that work beautifully with the other pieces and colours in their home. I love this part of the process — whether a client arrives with a clear vision or needs guidance, finding the right fabric for a piece is always a collaboration.
My time working in the charity sector deepened my commitment to minimising waste and avoiding synthetic materials wherever possible. Restoring rather than replacing is always the most sustainable choice — and usually the most beautiful one too.
